My Friend Toby with a backstage operative and two members of Team Chihuahua Dogs are invading the West End stage and stealing hearts long the way. Think Wizard of Oz and especially think Legally Blonde :The Musical. « Never work with children and animals » goes the adage. Did Sheridan Smith recall that with a wry smile and reflect on tricky stage moments ? «There’ve been a few. I actually turned to the audience the other night and went: ‘Never work with what?’ He usually runs and jumps onto the bed – and on that occasion he wouldn’t move!» but as an honourable lady she did not name

the guilty party of the five strong band of chihuahua who are on a rota to take on the stage role of the legendary Bruiser. Some take the maxim of never working with children and animals rather too much to heart Sheridan, a famous dog lover, knows only too well the highs and lows of having a dog in your life. Sadly for some rather sad reasons. Sheridan called in the UK national press to help track down her beloved black Shar-Pei, Enid, which had been swiped by heartless thieves. After the appeal went out Enid was returned to the loving arms of Sheridan. The bubbly ex-star of Gavin and Stacey has been a big hit in « Legally Blonde :the musical » with audiences and the critics. At this years Olivier Awards 2011 she scooped the award for the Best Actress in a Musical as Elle Woods. I was sitting next to her mum at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane when she stepped on stage to accept the award. Sheridan’s

mum was on her feet cheering her daughter to the rafters. I did note – silently, of course – that there was no chance of any of the fourlegged getting a gong. But I was not gonna rain on Sheridan’s parade! And that night you can only imagine that Enid was just as pleased to see Sheridan when she got home. No special treatment just happiness and that is the good thing about having dogs in your life, they are never starstruck. The message is simple. If you wanna stay grounded share your life with a pooch. And you might have noticed I tell it how it is !
