A true Dog Star: Uggie
So The Artist is making quite the splash as awards seasons hots up. And as the fever pitch mounts so does the buzz around a true hot dog. Uggie is the canine companion of George Valentin in this Black and White and all round wonderful film.
At a time of special effects, 3D and CGI this film brings a touch of raw emotion to the big screen. This tale of a guy who goes from superstar to has been in double quick time has struck a nerve in these hard times. And no prizes for guessing who is faithful to a man in freefall. Step forward Uggie.
He even gets to rescue George from his burning home by scaring up the attention of a passing cop.
All this is done with award winning antics.
Talking awards now there is the rub. This year has shown up the glaring injustice that is the ‘Gong System’. You see little Uggie is not in the running for any acting awards despite being a scene stealer.
As a result a campaign has begun to demands that his is up for consideration as Best Supporting.
I say yes. But I also would like to point out that Uggie already has the honour of being Palm Dog 2011 at Cannes. Even if the Academy and BAFTA choose to snub we all know that people has stood up and paid tribute to the acting skills of one big screen charmer.
