Winners off the beaten path
The 2003 edition proved that the Palm Dog does not only reward real-life canine actors, but can also celebrate dogs appearing on screen in various forms.
The jury awarded its Grand Prize to Bruno, the first animated dog in the charming feature The Triplets of Belleville, while the Palm Dog 2003 went to Moses, a chalk-drawn dog in Lars von Trier's Dogville. In this Danish film, a fugitive pursued by gangsters (Nicole Kidman) arrives in a small Rocky Mountain village and discovers that appearances can be deceiving…
The Oscar-winning Australian actress recalled the scene she shared with Moses at a press conference: “I said, 'I will believe in your faith.' There was a chalk sketch of a dog on the floor, I said 'OK' and pretended to pet it. Once you perform an act of faith, you are emotionally invested.”

A surprising ceremony
Unfortunately, the two winners could not be physically present to receive their awards. Producer Vibeke Windelov accepted the prestigious Palm Dog collar on behalf of Moses. The award was then passed to director Lars von Trier and now adorns the wall of fame in his Copenhagen office alongside several prestigious prizes, including the Palme d'Or.
The ceremony had one last surprise as Moses himself made a spectacular last-minute appearance!
