An animated dog recognised once again
Even though one of the iconic jury members, Derek Malcolm, could not attend, the 2009 edition of the Palm Dog celebrated one of cinema's most endearing dogs: Dug, the lively Golden Retriever from the animated film Up directed by Pete Docter and Bob Peterson.
Living in the wilds of Paradise Falls, this sweet, quirky dog is part of a pack sent to track a rare bird. His adorable personality left no one indifferent, especially not the jury!
Jean-Marc Barr, the star of The Big Blue, took to the stage to present the award. “It’s a great honour for me to present the Palm Dog 2009 to Dug in Up,” he said.
Bob Peterson, one of the film's directors, enthusiastically celebrated Dug's victory: “Oh my, I got an award, I love you all for giving me the Palm Dog, the Palm Dog, oh my!”

Two other canine actors honoured
At the award ceremony, Dug was not the only canine celebrated. The Jury Grand Prize went to Rex, the family dog in the Greek psychological drama Canine directed by Yorgos Lanthimos.
A special mention was also awarded to Syrus, the four-legged performer playing Tennents in the British film Fish Tank – directed by Andrea Arnold.
